Your photo run through a chain of digital failures

Glitch art and datamosh effect for photos

Glitchgood puts your photo through every failure of the digital image, gathered in one tool: pieces cut out and pasted back like a post-digital collage, macroblocks that melt like a video stripped of its keyframes (datamosh), a file damaged byte by byte (databending), pixels sorted into long streaks, JPEG compression pushed to ruin, 90s palettes and dithering, a CRT screen and a hacker interface. Add up to two more photos: the collage, datamosh, databending and color channels mix them into the first, and in animation they take turns with glitches at each switch. Each module has its own amount, and 18 recipes give you a starting point.

How it works

  1. Upload your photo (or drop it onto the preview), or keep the sample photo.
  2. Pick a recipe, then dial in each module: collage, datamosh, pixel sorting, databending, compression, lo-fi, signal, screen and interface. “Random” sometimes crosses two recipes.
  3. Export as a high-resolution PNG, as SVG (vector hacker interface) or as a looping MP4 video where the datamosh changes direction and the corruption jumps from frame to frame.

What you can do

  • Datamosh: melting, swirling or blooming macroblocks
  • Databending: shifted bytes, echoes, flipped bits, swapped channels
  • Vertical or horizontal pixel sorting
  • Real 8 × 8 JPEG compression and corrupted blocks
  • Lo-fi collage: windows, strips, grid, mirror, tinted fragments
  • 90s palettes and dithering: 1-bit, green console, terminal, teletext, Web 216
  • CRT screen: scanlines, phosphor, glow, curvature
  • Vector hacker interface: terminal, viewfinder, error windows
  • Up to three images mixed: one image melts into another (datamosh), fragments and color channels from each
  • 18 recipes and seamless looping animation

FAQ

What is datamoshing?

A compressed video stores only a few complete images (keyframes); the others just describe how blocks of pixels move. Remove the keyframes and those movements apply to the wrong image, so everything starts to flow. Glitchgood recreates this on a photo: the macroblocks slide generation after generation.

And databending?

It is the art of deliberately damaging a file’s data, as if you opened an image in a text editor and changed its bytes. Depending on the error, strips shift, colors invert or a pattern repeats as an echo.

Can I mix several photos?

Yes: add up to two more images in the “Image” section. The “Image mix” setting sets how much room they take in the collage, databending and color channels; in the datamosh, the next image can melt into the first. The “Three sources”, “Corrupted fade” and “Vapor triptych” recipes are made for this.

Can I get a glitched video?

Yes: turn on the animation, then export as MP4. The datamosh changes direction, slices and corruption jump twelve times per cycle, the terminal types itself, and the loop closes seamlessly.

Are my photos sent over the Internet?

No, all the computing happens in your browser.
